Everybody knows that chocolate is a girls best friend, alongside diamonds and shoes of course. Chocolate making is a fun and finger-licking activity for children and Mummies of all ages alike. Here I’ve sourced some bunny, duck, egg and star silicone moulds from Yolli so that we can make our own little chocs.
Silicone moulds are a fantastic creation that are highly durable, oven, freezer and microwave safe. They needn’t only be used just for chocolate mind, as they’re great for ice, gelatine, cakes and butter too, at just £4.98 each from Yolli they’re a must have kitchen accessory. As we decided to make chocolate treats I purchased a couple of family sized bars of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk ready for the melting to commence! Chocolate making, or rather melting, is a super quick, easy and fun activity to do. To start with we heated a saucepan of water on the stove to a rolling boil and then placed a dish into the water into which we snapped up our bars of milk chocolate. It takes a few minutes for the chocolate to heat up and melt as you stir it with a spoon, before pouring it into the silicone moulds and leaving to cool and set.
We placed our cooled chocolate in the fridge to help it to harden so that when we turned the silicone moulds out the chocolate was perfectly shaped and didn’t break apart or melt. The moulds are flexible, strong and so simple to wash, as you can poke them inside or out, whizz a scrubbing brush over them or pop them in the dishwasher. And the chocolates are absolutely huge! They turn a very average looking bar of chocolate into something rather special, celebrating special themes or occasions whilst being a great alternative and addition to cakes and cookies.
Next time we’re going to try layering our chocolate by using white, milk and dark chocolate set and poured in stages, perhaps with some chopped nuts and dried fruit. The possibilities really are endless and the giggles and smiles lasted all afternoon as we ooh’d and ahh’d over our delightful choccie creations.
