I’ve held a Facebook account since the day it first started and have spent many wonderful years filling my profile with pictures of my children, videos of places I’ve visited on holiday, birthday wishes, family occasions, relationships, births, heartbreak and happiness. Facebook has unconsciously become the footprint of my adult life since my tender teenage years, and when I was locked out of it this week because they needed to verify my identity I panicked at the thought of losing my profile, and priceless memories, for good.
How To Verify Your Identity On Facebook
When Facebook halted my login on my phone app asking me first to confirm my identity I decided to check around online to see if this was some kind of spam or fraud first to target my personal details and information. After extensive searching it appeared that Facebook hadn’t been hacked, and indeed their new policy is to ensure that Facebook users use their real names and date of birth to prevent identity theft, and I suppose remove any false or malicious users.
Facebook Confirm Your Identity
I was presented with the option to enter my birth name and upload a form of official identity to confirm this, for which I took a photo of my UK drivers license on my mobile and attached it within the app. You can also do this via a browser and other documents are acceptable if you don’t have a drivers license, the full details are here.
Facebook Thanks For Your Help Message
It took less than a minute for me to complete the identity form for which I received a message on screen stating “Thanks For Your Help. We’ll take a look at the documents you submitted and get back to you. If we need more help confirming your name, we’ll reach out for additional documentation.” And I fully expected Facebook to ping me across a confirmation email within a few hours. Four days passed and I was still locked out of my account, as each time I tried to access the app or browser I was prompted by a login screen where I had to enter my email and password, before being directed to the Confirm Your Identity page which showed me the same standard Thanks For Your Help message as before. I couldn’t login, couldn’t access my business page, use messenger or view any Facebook content. I received no word from Facebook, no emails, no texts, just silence and a locked profile and my friends text my phone to say that they couldn’t get their messages through to me on Facebook and asked if something was wrong.
So I started checking out message boards and help topic posts online to see if other people were experiencing the same problem and how long it would take for my profile to be returned, if ever, and I was shocked at what I found. It appeared that people had had the same problem with verification as me since 2011 with some profiles never returned, others taking several months and some less than 24hrs. As it had been five days already and I needed my page returned as well as my private profile ASAP, I tried to find other ways to reach Facebook or confirm my identity more quickly where others said it was impossible. I had this horrific image of millions of peoples profiles sat pending in a queue whilst members of Facebook staff trickled their way through a handful of profiles a day confirming individuals identities and the backlog growing more extensive each day.
Facebook Confirm Your Identity With A Passcode
I found that accounts can be verified by a passcode, which is a number that you’ve set on your profile much like a pin code that only you will know. I used the Login Settings on my Facebook app, found on the welcome screen as a clickable link where it displayed my profile picture and first name and asked me to enter my passcode. I wasn’t sure if I’d set a code, nor what it would be, but I tried my luck at using a four-digit number I’d most likely to have given and jumped for joy as it was accepted. Only seconds later it redirected me to the Thanks For You Help screen and stated that Facebook would look at my submitted documents and get back to me. So it appears it doesn’t matter whether you sign in with your user name and password or passcode, as Facebook still have to verify your identity before you can have access to your profile.
Facebook Report An Issue With Verifying My Account
Next I tried to contact Facebook via their help centre and filled out an online form to Report An Issue With Verifying My Account. I was sent an email from ‘Facebook’ saying “Hi, thanks for contacting us. It looks like you filled out the wrong form. We’re sorry for the confusion. Please fill out the form below to get back into your account. This is the link they sent to me via email. But it was the exact same form I had already completed, so I replied to the email with “I have been unable to access my account for the past 4 days and have a business page under my account for which I pay daily ads, I have no access to either and cannot see what notifications, messages or money is going out. Is there a way to confirm my identity ASAP please as the link you have just sent me is the same form that I completed already. I have completed it again and attached my UK drivers license once more. I really appreciate your time and desperately need access to my account. Thank you.”
Facebook Help Us Confirm Your Name Form
Within a few minutes I received an email response back from Facebook again stating “To reopen this account, please reply to this email stating your authentic name (as it would be listed on a government-issued ID like a passport or drivers license.) Once we know your authentic name, we can update your profile and reactivate your account. Immediately I replied with my full name and the message “Will this give me access to my account?” and awaited their reply. Nothing came. By this time it was midnight in England and time that I went to bed to be up for the morning, I sat checking my email for around an hour to make sure I didn’t miss their correspondence, but when nothing arrived for over ninety minutes I fell asleep.
Facebook Verified My Identity
The following morning I was greeted by an email from Facebook stating “Hi Tracy, thanks for verifying your identity. We’ve unlocked your account, and you should now be able to log back in. We’re sorry for the inconvenience. Thanks, Jack B, Communications Operations.” And after inputting my email and password I once again had access to my private profile and page after five days of being locked out. I believe a problem occurred with needing to verify my identity because a few years ago I added a jokey middle name to my profile, as most people were using nicknames at the time, Disney character titles or completely random identities and I thought it was cute to give myself a funny middle name too. Clearly it’s not and it caused a whole lot of hassle now that the rules have changed! So my advice to you if you wish to avoid your account being locked or deleted is to remove any information from your profile that isn’t legally correct, such as a false year of birth, incorrect middle names, nicknames or fantasy locations and use your real first and last name along with your date of birth as shown on legal documentation. You can still set your information to private so that other people can’t see it, but for Facebook if it doesn’t add up your account will be taken, so it’s not worth the risk of losing your profile that’s taken years to build.
I hope that in showing how my account was returned to me you can have your account verified too, and save a bit of time from waiting around being locked out. If Facebook haven’t caught up with checking your information yet then save them the hassle and make changes now before you get locked out for something that could take a minute to update yourself.

I have had the same but contacted their call centre who asked for payment to get this sorted. I have had to report the matter to the police but also the Fraud bureau after being ask for payment by their call centre to get it stored who apparently are a third party to Facebook. I have also reported it to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau as they said this was unusual activity. I have emails the Managing Director of Facebook and the owner. Hi Tracy, i hope you can help me. On January 10 2017 while using my FB account it was automatically log out. Then when I started logging in there’s feature that I needed to verify the photos of my friends for the reason that some one must have been using my account. Since I am unable to verify some of them because I met my other Facebook friends here and barely chat with them. They required me to submit ID’s for verification which I did. I received a reply from Alyssa (FB) that they can’t activate it, perhaps my name is different from the one I used on FB since I am a transgender. This is the same problem that I had as on Facebook my middle name was a joke name. I emailed them to confirm that my real name did not include my Facebook middle made and provided my drivers license to show this. I think if they find a difference in information it is passed on to another department and put in a queue so if you tell them this directly and confirm your name with ID they can deal with it quickly.

How to set passcode for FB???Tracy plz!!!
You had to have done this before you were locked out of your account. I didn’t realise but I already had mine, so I presume at some point in the past I was prompted to enter one for additional security and forgot about it as I don’t usually go into my settings on my app. If you’re already locked out try entering a passcode you would have most commonly used, if not then you may have to wait until after your account is back, but entering the code won’t speed up the process as it just took me back to the same screen. It’s no different to logging in with an email and password, it just takes less time.
Have this problem myself now since friday, I have 100s of photos on there, and had account since 2008, tried contacting them, and it just goes back to that screen, hate that this has happened to me.

I have now just got a second reply, I have just included my birth certificate, my name had “Thfc” in the middle of it for the football team I support, how pathetic and petty for facebook to take an account down without notice, i’ve had it since 2008, my name was real, just the middle bit, didnt see a problem as lots of people do it.
This is the same problem that I had with a fun middle name in my title, now that you have provided your correct name it shouldn’t be long before your profile is returned. I can understand that Facebook need to be safe and confirm identities as the law has changed on the way online users are now held accountable for their behaviour.
I agree users need to be held accountable as the law has changed and to know who they are, just think the process and lack of communication is whats wrong with all this, facebook should warn people that your account will cease if you do not provide the info, and there should be better communication in contacting them.

So frustrating, my account is locked until my ID has been verified as well, since 7am Sat 26Jul (NSW Australia local time). I have a business page linked to my profile too, I am getting anxious that I’ll never be ‘unlocked’, I have sent all of the required documents and have emailed the contact centre as well as sending messages via the support dashboard too, I guess I’ll sit tight and try not to stress.
I wonder if there is any way of ever finding out WHY I was asked to verify my ID?
That sucks Michelle, but I found the staff were rather helpful once I got a hold of them and stated that I have a business page. Have you perhaps used a nickname for a middle name? A false title? Pretend date of birth? Have you had any contact back from Facebook? As a precaution when you get your business page back add somebody else as a moderator or admin so that if you account ever gets locked again you can still run your business, even if they never use it at least you know you’ll have access.

I’m sorry to hear this Nada, but I do not recommend sharing your login details with anybody. There is a link to the help page in my post and when you attempt to sign into your account it should give you the option to enter your personal details and submit a proof if ID. I have included step by step screen shots of how I got my account back.

Haha, I wish it was as simple as not using my real name. My real name is Holly Ice. People barely believe me as it is which is annoying enough but now I’ve been locked out of my account. Joy! Facebook really should be more culturally sensitive. All those with ‘strange’ or ‘unusual’ names, like Native Americans or foreigners are not gonna be happy.
I think they’re doing it to everybody eventually, what what I’ve seen it’s taken them a few years to get round to my name and no doubt they’ll keep going for many more to come. I like you cannot afford to create a new FB page. I am connected to many people in my life such as martial arts, military, school, and my job. Many of the pages I cannot even access nor get my pictures back. I have been locked out for almost 8 days and its really agitating me b/c I need that page. My last name I had an alias but should I keep repeating the process or give them another 4-5 days before thing to re-confirm again for God knows which time this will be?

Hi Tracy, could you suggest any help for my problem? Despite giving my mobile number to Facebook (and correctly entering the code they sent me), my account was still suspended: The explanation was this “We’ve asked you to verify your identify because it looks like you may have multiple accounts or may not be using your authentic identity.” So I read what identification Facebook required and sent them a JPEG of my UK Driving License. 12 hours later, Facebook emailed me saying they would not give me access to my account because “I Haven’t sent a form of ID that we can use to confirm your identity OR Sent us documentation that doesn’t match the name, photo or date of birth listed on this Facebook account” . But as a Driving Licence is a listed form of Identity for Facebook, the only possible issue is that my Driving Licence shows my first name as ‘David’ but my Facebook account is under the name of Dave. Problem is this: All the other forms of Identity (e.g. Birth Certificate, Social Security card etc) also give my name as David, so these won’t be any better than my Driving Licence. Any thoughts appreciated Tracy! Thanks
Hi David it may be worth submitting another form asking for a member of staff to respond and to state that your drivers license is different to your facebook profile name. I used my UK license to confirm my identity and informed them that “sphincter” was not my real middle name it was just a joke name that I’d used between my first and last name on my profile. As soon as I identified this they removed it and gave me my account back. Please let me know how you get on, I hope this helps.

They blocked my account on Christmas Eve ! I was in the middle of doing Santa Visits for kids and they were following the progress on FB. So the kids all got upset thinking I had blocked them. Parents couldn’t get in touch., It was hell. And I could not wish anyone a merry Christmas,. friends, family. Nobody., and I didn’t hear from a soul either !!!
Not only that, I thought to myself……….. What if Facebook were also doing that to vulnerable people ! Lonely people, who’s only contact with the outside world WAS Facebook !
How many of them were cut off from everyone at Christmas because someone had reported their account ? Was it a spiteful Ex.,, and abuser ?
How Many of them, as a result of their account being suspended, saw that act as the final straw and ended it all ! Committed suicide !
Facebook should really think about how they handle this issue ! Why don’t they keep the account live while requesting confirmation of identity ?
Why don’t they look through the persons account and see they are an actual person.

I am all for improving security and as far as I am aware it’s not a malicious reporting that makes a profile require verification but more a slow process of sweeping through every single user which has been going on for years now. It’s important to be able to trace people to their actions and with the sheer volume of abuse and bullying online these days it will make laws easier to enforce as cyber bullying leads to many suicides. I was blocked about a month ago because I never use my legal name on social media. Checked every email and none was from facebook about requiring legal names. This account was active since 2009 and the nickname was not offensive at all, and everybody knows me by it. While I do understand their request for legal names, this opens up a can of worms for identity theft. I haven’t used my “real” name online since 1996 and still verified my identity via my phone number on record and email for that account. Nothing.
I relented and submitted four government issued IDs. All I was told was that I have to update my name on my profile, which of course I don’t have access to, and then they closed the trouble ticket while refusing to give me my data. I have used every contact form and all have been the same result: Nothing.
Just want my data back, which they claim I own. Yet accounts such as “Deez Nuts” are acceptable. Pathetic.
I tried many ways but that didn’t work. Then I found your post. I read carefully and tried what you said. Finally it’s work within less than 24 hours 😀 Thank you very much 😀

I have an Idea.
If everyone who has been booted out like us, creates a new account and then starts reporting every name they can, every chance they can, we might be able to upset enough people so that they make so much noise that they have to change there policy.
Everything I have read has told me that facebook has made it open slather for people to report false names, this is the chink in there armor, this is how we get them back.
We take away there users, we overload there workers, and we create a stink that goes viral without facebook.
I think that will only make the process worse, security is something we must all abide by and although the process may take a while it is certainly necessary. I was lost without my account but thankful that I have it back. I hope yours is returned to you soon.
Well I thought this was a new thing, since I just saw it tonight. But going by comment dates here, I guess FB does this in waves? Tracy, I have a question (a couple): Are they confirming my identity based solely on the documents I gave (ID card for me)? My current profile has correct DOB, a couple friends from Candy Crush, and my picture is of a troll (the cute ones with the hair from bygone years).
Are they gonna match my ID card’s photo with my FB photo? I can’t change the photo, the name I was going by, or anything to make it match since they locked me out. Should I have done something prior submitting the documents, if it was even possible?

From what I believe Facebook aren’t looking to punish anybody and accuse them of fraud but more to ensure they are using their real identities and a profile picture can be anything and involve anyone, it’s just your name and date of birth that they are concerned with. When you registered your profile you may have entered your real name and then chosen a display name, so long as this matches your identity card you should be fine. Please let me know how you get on.

Now in 2016. it seems it’s impossible to activate your account. You’re just spinning in circles, you submit an ID and you get an automated message that you should submit ID… It seems no human is reading the appeals…Ridiculous! If anyone knows how to handle this, share some info!
I have another account which I set up for my grandson to play an online game which has to be played through Facebook. Logging in to this account yesterday and found it had been locked. It requested name, birthday and sensitive data. The user name for that account was a modification of his real name and so I cannot prove it via documentation. There is no way I am going to forward anything either as was never sure if it was a Hacker. The account is now lost along with photographs and video footage. I am now considering removing my own profile and taking all photographs and videos off incase this account is locked. I am not sure why Facebook would consider locking peoples accounts without good reason.
I believe they’re trying to improve security and clamp down on internet bullying but ensuring people are who they say they are. I’m sorry your account was locked but it may be a good idea to backup your photos.

As you had a made up name they should have given you the option to provide your real name and edit your account accordingly which it sounds like you’ve done several times already. They may have put you into a different waiting line for people with entirely different profiles to their actual identity, as mine was simply a silly middle name which was quick to rectify it therefore didn’t take as long. Perhaps yours is more in depth because they have to prove you are who you say you are and I don’t know if this is possible as it didn’t happen with my case. Do you also have a real Facebook profile or was that your only one?
Yes I also have my Real name on my Facebook already create. But I don’t understand how can they continued to hold my account if I provide my ID over 20 Times.. Just because you verified your identity doesn’t mean they won’t lock your account again and ask you to repeat the process of verification again. They have done this to me many times because I am very active at Facebook–do lots of chats with many friends, lots of commenting and photo uploads! Each time you engage in any Facebook activity for more than 1 hr continuously, they start restricting you by demanding you identify animals or watches or rivers in the captcha!!! I believe they are using AI and all their restrictions, blockings, lock outs and harassment are automated! My opinion is that they have grown big, been established so they don’t need to spend billions of dollars to maintain the billions of accounts they have on their servers, so they have to find ways to eliminate as many accounts as possible. So, this is their way of doing so-by harassing millions of users to verify their identities. Personally, I may have to delete and leave Facebook soon because I don’t need this harassment and headache. What Facebook is doing now reminds me of Myspace. They did the same silly stuff and that led to their demise and the rise and domination of Facebook. Now Facebook is doing the same and even worse and I won’t be surprise if they are slapped with global class action lawsuits that would generate negative publicity and an implosion and demise like myspace

Hi Teja it means that the form of ID you provided is not acceptable and they can’t use it to unlock your account. Submit a different ID perhaps a drivers license or passport and try again.

Gosh, I don’t think that’s something that can be rectified if your name, date of birth and identity are all false! Sorry Teja I don’t know what to suggest, but I wouldn’t make a false drivers license or you may get in trouble with the law.

So long as the name on the account matches the identity I can’t see a problem with them unlocking the account. In future please ensure you give somebody else admin access to the page so if one person is locked out your business can continue. Please let me know how you get on.

Three days ago Facebook told me that I had to confirm my identity and I did and I still can’t get into my facebook what can I do to log into my account
I’ve been trying for a couple of days to log in. Earlier when i tried to access to my fb account with my mobile number, and i wasn’t able to for some unknown reason, as the number I input was correct. So I had to make a temporary account, after adding my old friends, when I was thinking to get back my first account, I wasn’t able to access any of my account. It showed, account was temporarily unavailable. Open from browser. I used UC browser to log in, but it showed that I have to submit my I’d as well as some document. Every time I try to, it shows, that some problems occurred they are trying to solve. But if I can’t access any of my account, how will i put them. I am not even able to deactivated one of my account. Since same number was used in both account(is that gonna create any problem?) I don’t care about this, but I desperately want my old account back. And I didn’t give any information about me in those IDs, since I was getting teased by a few people. Now, how can I access to my old account (if not possible, then new one) I need that back at any cost. Help me out. Thanks!
Have you tried to contact a member of staff at Facebook to tell them this? So long as you can prove your identity you can correct this.

On October 1st 2016 FB informed me that they would like to verify my identity, because it looks like I may have multiple accounts, or not be using my authentic identity on Facebook. I was surprised because it happened only two days after I opened my account (after deleting the old one 9 months ago). I sent them my passport photo, that they rejected (I don’t know why). Then I provided them with the scan of my government issued ID. After 2 days (on October 3d) they messaged me that they have reviewed my report and it is no longer an issue. However after this message (two days from October 3d) I still cannot log in to my account. After trying to log in I see the message: “We’ll get in touch with you at the email address you provided after we’ve reviewed your ID. You will now be logged out of Facebook.” I tried to change my password for the account (in case that it was hacked) and I succeeded (why?). However still I can not log in. My case is closed everytime I try to re-open it and get in touch with FB. This is confusing, I am a real person and I need my contacts with professionals and my friends for my life and career.

Pls help. Just got locked out yesterday, fb asking for a UK government id with photo and dob on it. The only options open to all UK citizens are passport and drivers licence that comply with having full name, photo and dob in one place. 99% of Facebook status accepted ids are USA specific eg ID card, school id, yearbook picture, we aren’t quite so anal in the UK! Can’t see us standing for a national ID card ever! Well, I have no passport or drivers license. What am I to do? Spend £50 on a new birth certificate ( no idea what happened to mine I’ve never seen it) another £50 on a passport and wait months for it to come? Or pay for driving lessons and license when I can’t afford a car just to get on fb? I only used it for fairyland anyway! But I have invested money and time into my game and I miss my garden as it is I’m probably going to lose effects that cost me money 😕 Thing is I can’t contact them at all I can’t login, and no such ID With all the requisite info on one card/document exists in this country apart from passport /license unless you work in some forms of security. To make matters worse I am part Salford Sioux, and we don’t have tribal ID cards here either numptys! You’d think they’d get a lawyer with knowledge of international law to look at this crap before they dole it out onto innocent ppl. Animal abusers, foul language porn, peados it’s all okay with fb, but god forbid you should be native American or have a flower child name, or you are too poor to afford their idea of ID. I can’t get in touch, at all I dunno what to do, don’t they realise that the reason we very rarely have all that info on one card at once is because THAT WOULD BE A SECURITY ISSUE IN ITSELF!. That’s why my bank statement is no good to them, they want full name banks usually only use initials incase the letter is misdelivered. How thick are Americans sometimes?! And what precisely does “check” mean? A paycheck, or a cheque?! Please help these people are morons. I feel like going to the press. Nasty trolls reported my account, and now I’m held to ransom literally until I pay for the id to get back in when I cannot afford it, and yet the four letter rants and insults from the troll remain online unpunished unremoved and I can’t even retaliate. Just insulted. Sheesh!

No way, no how, will I upload my personally identifiable information to some social media site. I’ve been asked to confirm my identity with after “someone” reported me using a false name. Well, the name is not “false”, I use it in real life, my mother calls me by it, and it is the name my friends and family call me. It is not, however my legal name. That is reserved for official business, and due to the nature of my job I will not use it on FB. FB can take a hike!
