Switch Your Bowling Ball For A Battle Axe: Digital Indoor Axe Throwing

Bowling. It’s a classic. We’ve all done it hundreds of times. But let’s be honest, sometimes the shiny shoes and the quest for a spare just don’t cut it anymore. If you’re looking for a family outing that’s a little more edge-of-your-seat exciting, a little more primal scream satisfying, then ditch the bowling alley and head to an axe throwing range instead!

Yes, you read that right. Axe throwing. And before you picture a bunch of burly lumberjacks out in the wilderness, let me assure you, this is an activity that the whole family can enjoy!

Why Axe Throwing Trumps Bowling (Hear Me Out!)

  • Unleash Your Inner Viking: Let’s face it, there’s something inherently cool about hurling a sharp object at a wooden target. It taps into our primal instincts in a way that gently rolling a ball just doesn’t. There’s a satisfying thwack as the axe hits the bullseye, a feeling of accomplishment that’s hard to replicate.
  • More Engaging Than You Think: Bowling can sometimes feel a bit repetitive. Axe throwing, on the other hand, requires focus, technique, and a splat of strategy. From learning a new skill, experimenting with different throws, and cheering each other on as you aim for that perfect bullseye. It’s surprisingly engaging and keeps everyone involved.
  • A Great Stress Reliever (Seriously!): There’s something incredibly cathartic about throwing an axe. It’s a great way to release some pent-up energy and let off some steam. Plus, who doesn’t enjoy a little friendly competition?
  • Surprisingly Safe: Axe throwing ranges have trained instructors who will teach you the proper technique and safety rules. They make sure that everyone knows how to handle an axe safely and responsibly, so you can focus on having fun.
  • Creates Lasting Memories: Let’s be honest, how many bowling trips do you actually remember? Axe throwing is a more unique and memorable experience that your family will be talking about for weeks to come. Plus, the photo opportunities are epic!

Most axe throwing venues have age restrictions, usually around 10-12 years old, but it’s always best to check with your local range. As long as everyone in your group is old enough and able to follow instructions, you’re good to go!

Game Of Throwing: Interactive Digital Axe Throwing Lanes

At Game Of Throwing, the tradition of axe throwing merges seamless with technology in interactive digital lanes, with projected targets and real axes. With 18 exciting games on offer, you can share a lane of six, or go at it alone, making it the perfect experience for birthdays, stag and hen do’s, family days out, friends competing or company team building – if you’ve got a cool boss of course!

Just a short stroll from Shadwell train station, London, my 17yr old daughter and I took to axe alley to battle it out across a series of games from a traditional target practice having to achieve the highest score, to tic-tac-toe, whack a mole, zombies, assassins, tetris-esque and a fruit ninja style time trial as our 60th minute ended. We laughed, squealed with joy and had the most hilariously entertaining time – all whilst getting a pretty epic upper body workout!

The digital projectors change the cork-esque back board into that of traditional arcade games, allowing you to project a whole series of games into one space, just as you would play on an i-pad or computer screen. It conveniently tally’s your scores as you go with a chip inbedded within each axe that you throw, as well as allowing you to pick an avatar and, most importantly, come up with a ridiculous name for yourself. I was a pink rabbit called Mumma and my daughter was a yellow tiger called Moodles.

The instructors were super friendly, fun and informative, demonstrating our safety briefing before we began, followed by assisting us step-by-step in learning to throw, keeping a close eye on us throughout. With the instructor making small tweaks and adjustments to our throws, this allowed us to fine-tune our axe skills and up our scores; stepping a half inch back from the line, fully extending the arm, keeping the wrist straight and letting go of the axe at the crucial moment made the difference between a good score and absolutely defeating one another!

By the end of our several games we pretty much drew on scores, as some games were easier than others, some had moving targets, and some you had to think ahead for which target to hit to stop your opponent in their tracks. A great mind and body workout with so many selections and excitement that traditional axe throwing simply can’t provide. We truly appreciated how the digital world was merged seamlessly with axe throwing to bring it into the modern era with a little something for everyone. The music blasting throughout and flames coming up for each win were such an adrenaline buzz!

60 minute private lane sessions range from just £22.99 – £34.99 per person, which includes training from dedicated axe masters, catering for groups of up to 42 participants engaging in activities simultaneously. Throwers aged 10-16yrs must be accompanied by an adult, and with games that are fun for all ages, you’ll be hard pushed to sit on the sidelines and not be tempted to join in. What a fantastic way to spend a wet and cold mother-daughter afternoon, sharpening our hand-eye co-ordination and allowing our inner-children to flourish!

If you’re looking for a fun, exciting, and quirky family outing, then digital axe throwing is definitely worth a shot. It’s a chance to learn a new skill, unleash your inner warrior, and create some unforgettable memories. You might just discover your new favourite activity.
